The Institute for Culture and Society (ICS) of the University of Navarra has brought the qualitativeresearch closer to 40 participants of a course organized by the ATLANTES Global Observatory of Palliative. Among them were health and social science professionals, academics and researchers from different disciplines.

The program was coordinated by María Arantzamendi, researcher at ATLANTES. In addition to her, speakers included Olga López de Dicastillo, Vice-Dean of Nursing at the Public University of Navarra, and Vinita Mahtani, technician at research in the Unit of research of the University Hospital Ntra. Sra. de Candelaria and in the Primary Care Management of Tenerife and in the Service of assessment of the Canary Islands Health Service.

"The qualitative research is becoming more and more popular because it allows us to approach reality from the individual perspective of each person and provides a closer view of the human being," said María Arantzamendi.

Different contexts of research

Along these lines, he explained that it can be applied to any context, since financial aid at researcher can "understand a person's motivations, their goals in life, their values, feelings, beliefs and the reasons behind their behavior".

The program has addressed project designs such as Phenomenology, which emphasizes individual experiences; Ethnography, which emphasizes context; or Grounded Theory, which explains how processes occur, including some of a complex nature.

"In cooking we can develop different recipes from a list of ingredients. The same thing happens with the qualitative research . For example, we can collect information through interviews, but depending on how we prepare, conduct and analyze them, we will obtain different results," said Arantzamendi.

As he commented, the qualitative research plays a key role in ATLANTES projects: it has helped the team understand how palliative professionals learn to cope with the emotional challenges of their work and to explore the value of gratitude in patients and their families.

The Palliative Medicine line is one of the main axes of the 2025 Strategy of the University of Navarra, which promotes a social impact-oriented research and a scientific production focused, in this case, on the search for personalized solutions for the health care of patients with advanced and serious diseases.
