Nearly 350 medical students from all over Spain at conference Interactive Surgery for Students (JOICE)

The University of Navarra will host the event this week, which includes live surgeries, practical workshops and lectures by surgeons Diego González Rivas and Pedro Cavadas.

Nearly 350 students from Schools of Medicine from all over Spain will meet quotation at the University of Navarra on February 9, 10 and 11 for the celebration of the conference Interactive Surgery for Students (JOICE).

The event will include the retransmission, for the first time in an activity for university students, of surgical operations live from the Clínica Universidad de NavarraThe event will include, for the first time in an activity for university students, live broadcasting of surgeries from the University of Navarra, as well as various practical workshops and lectures at position by renowned specialists.

Among those attending will be students from the universities of Valladolid, Malaga, Santiago de Compostela, CEU Cardenal Herrera, Valencia, Alcalá de Henares, Autónoma de Madrid San Pablo CEU, Complutense, Francisco Vitoria, Europea de Madrid, Rovira y Virgili, Jaume I, Zaragoza, Murcia and Salamanca.

All of them will have the opportunity to participate in some of the more than 15 practical workshops offered, including several organized at the Simulation Center of the University of Navarra, such as "Local Flaps in Plastic Surgery", "Clinical Cases in Gynecology", "Laparoscopic Surgery", "Emergency Tracheotomy" or "Ophthalmologic Microsurgery", among others.

On the other hand, on the esplanade of Sciences Building, activities such as emergency care will be carried out, including the extraction of a patient trapped in a vehicle, or a workshop on hemorrhage management in the military field, given by experts from the Zaragoza Military Base .

Live surgery and world-class master classes

The practical sessions will be complemented by three operations, in Ophthalmology, General Surgery and Orthopedic Surgery and Traumatology; carried out by doctors Barrio, Martí and Valentí de la Clínica Universidad de Navarra from the hospital center and which will be broadcast live to the students.

Finally, the JOICE includes several keynote lectures at position by specialists such as Lieutenant Colonel Laguardia, who will speak on "Surgery and Military Operations Abroad"; Dr. Diego Gonzalez Rivas, thoracic surgeon at the Hospital of A Coruña, who is credited with the development of the Uniportal VATS technique that allows the removal of lung tumors with a single incision; and Dr. Pedro Cavadas, plastic surgeon and author of the first complete face transplant in Spain.

The JOICE are some conference organized by students and resident doctors whose goal is to expand the surgical knowledge of medical students in an interactive way. For this, they have counted with the financial aid of several specialists of the Clínica Universidad de Navarra and professors of the School of Medicine as Dr. Jesus Barrio and Dr. Fernando Martinez Regueira.
