Arturo Gullón Macarrón, one of the pioneers of the School of Sciences, dies

On Friday, October 10, Arturo Gullón, professor of the former Genetics department and one of the pioneers of the School of Sciences, passed away in Estella at the age of 97.

Born in Ecija (Seville) in 1928, he graduated in Medicine from the University of Seville and in Odontology and Stomatology from the Complutense University of Madrid. He extended his programs of study in Germany with a prestigious scholarship from the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation and carried out his teaching and research at different universities.

Arturo joined the School of Sciences in 1963, being then Dean Álvaro del Amo,where he taught General Biology, Genetics and the doctorate courses in Population Genetics . He was director programs of study and director of the Genetics department , and promoted the growth of the School. In 1975 he became Chair of Genetics at the University of La Laguna, where he also worked as a professor and researcher. He later rejoined the University.

One of the lines of research in which Professor Gullón was a specialist and made important contributions was the study of genetic mutations. In addition, he published several works such as Introducción a la Genetics de eucariotas and a guide on Applied Statistics and Biostatistics, in partnership with María José Calasanz and Marta García Granero.

María José Calasanz, professor at the School of Sciences and Arturo's disciple, highlights the "enormous generosity and trust" he had in her from the beginning of his academic degree program . "He was a great mentor. I will remember him with great affection.

For his part, Luis Herrera, Full Professor Emeritus of the School of Sciences, underlines his generosity, kindness and good sense of humor: "Arturo was a generous and kind man, fulfilling all the tasks of governance of the School as director programs of study and director of the department, with a fine and delicate attention all faculty and professor staff , always surrounded by a handful of students to whom he dedicated time without measure for their training and preparation".
