The Chair of Heritage and Navarrese Art of the School of Philosophy and Letters of the University of Navarra has published the book "El programa de mano de San Fermín. A unique ephemera more than a century old". Written by Iñaki Urricelqui Pacho, it was presented last November 24, at the Nuevo Casino of Pamplona.
The work offers a pioneering analysis of the San Fermín handbills, from their consideration as a publishing house product conceived for an ephemeral use but which, with the passage of time, has acquired a historical, cultural and artistic B Thus, the study traces its evolution from 1881 to the present day, showing how, beyond its informative function, it has become a testimony of the transformation of the festival, its symbols and its social projection.
Relying on funds from the Municipal file of Pamplona and private collections, such as that of the Mencos family, Urricelqui examines the ideation, design and materialization of the program, the artists and illustrators who made it possible, and the printers and workshops that contributed to elevate it to the category of design product. It also highlights the contribution of Navarrese painters and illustrators, as well as the growing role of photography in the creation of a Sanfermines aesthetic. "For the first time, the focus is not on the programmed fiesta, but on the publishing house instrument that communicates it, revealing its relevance in the consolidation of the typical and topical image of a celebration that is as ritualized as it is changing," explains the author.
The prologue, signed by Luis Garbayo, contextualizes the study in the tradition of conservation of the so-called flying papers or fugitive pieces, documents considered ephemeral in ancient times, but today essential for understanding social and cultural history.
The monograph maintains the format and design of the works that the Chair has dedicated in recent years to Navarrese jewelry; the house and the domestic space; or the chapel of San Fermin in Pamplona. As in all of them, it also has a digital version that can be consulted and download free of charge from the website of the Chair of Navarrese Heritage and Art.
