According to the latest “ report ” report from the Ministry of Health, more than 55% of the adult population in Spain is overweight (39.8% are overweight and 15.2% are obese), a trend that continues to rise steadily.
With the goal to generate scientific evidence to address this public health challenge, the research center in Nutrition at the University of Navarra is promoting new trials aimed at exploring personalized nutritional strategies based on a comprehensive approach . To carry out this research, investigators are seeking volunteers aged 18 to 75 who are overweight or obese for three programs of study: ARTI-UP, funded by the Ministry of Science, Innovation, and Universities; PLENTYFOOD-2; and PORTIONS-V. Participation is free, and those interested can email voluntariosnut@unav.es.
Designed to prevent diabetes, the ARTI-UP “ project ” aims to improve glucose levels and promote weight loss over a 16-week period. The program includes a personalized Mediterranean-style guideline per diem expenses and nutritional supplementation rich in antioxidants, requiring attendance five in-person visits. At the end of the program, participants will receive detailed information about their body composition, glycemic control, gut microbiota, metabolism, and biological age.
Nutritional, culinary, physical exercise, and emotional well-being counseling
The PORTIONS-V clinical essay focuses on weight loss through a comprehensive 12-month program. Throughout this year, participants receive regular nutritional and psychological support, along with counseling on diet, cooking, physical exercise, and emotional well-being. The research includes physiological analyses, such as assessment of body composition and taste sensitivity, as well as a test focused on functionally assessing specific areas of the brain related to appetite in a subgroup of volunteers.
For its part, PLENTYFOOD-2, which focuses on the nutritionalassessment of food intake, analyzes the physiological response to a healthy meal. Volunteers must visit the Nutrition research center t schedule from 11:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. on two specific occasions (once a week) to consume the meal provided, consisting of vegetable lasagna, blueberry compote, and water.
Biological samples will be collected at all three programs of study sites for the analysis of metabolic parameters. These programs of study will take place in Pamplona, at the facilities of the Nutrition Research Center ( research center ) at the University of Navarra, and will include in-person visits by the participants.
