The Writing Center of the University of Navarra has awarded the prizes of the first Memes Contest, a competition organized for promote among the students the correct and, at the same time, creative and humorous use of the Spanish language , in the framework of the new textual typologies. 

In the various proposals submitted, the students of the School of Humanities and Social Sciences demonstrated their ingenuity and skill words. After careful deliberation by the jury—composed of María José Gallucci, director of the Writing Center; Carmela Pérez-Salazar, coordinator of Degree Philology member ofadvisor Writingadvisor committee ; and Javier Yániz, tutor student intern Writing Center— the first award was granted award Javier Viñeta (@filo.momos), a fourth-year student in the Degree Philology , who was awarded a copy of the book“Las 1001 curiosidades, palabras y expresiones del español,” published in 2020 by the Fundéu. José Lacarra (@memespaceunav), a fourth-year student in the Degree Literature and Creative Writing (LEC), came in second place, and Santiago Campodónico (@metamemosis), a third-year student in Degree Literature and Creative Writing (LEC), took third place.

When evaluating the proposals, the jury has taken into account, first of all, the effort. As they have pointed out, "the winners have worked conscientiously in the elaboration of the memes; some have sent many, and in the result it can be seen that they have taken a lot of time". Ingenuity has been another factor to take into account: "The winning memes show a creative capacity A, which can be seen in the selection of images, in the search for a relationship with topics related to the Writing Center (often complicated by the conceptual distance) and in the combination of different elements for the composition of the piece," they continue. A sense of humor, as they explain, has also been decisive in awarding the prizes. "The jury's work has been rewarded with a good dose of humor. We had fun with the creations and selected those that made us laugh the most".

Finally, the members of the jury alluded to the originality of the proposals: "The presentation of a series of three memes (progressive) on the same topic made us choose the winner. Javier Yániz deserves a special accredited specialization , specifically the meme of Pérez Reverte and Francisco Rico, which has not been awarded because it belongs to the jury, but we also wanted to recognize its merit and quality". "With this contest, it has become clear that philologists are (we are) ingenious beings and have a sense of humor," they conclude. Congratulations to all!
