The congress MZT (Materialen Zientzia eta Teknologia) was recently held in Bilbao and the award was awarded to the best scientific poster for a work presented by researchers from the department of Mechanics and Materials at Tecnun. "In the poster we present a methodology for the prediction of wear of tool in drilling operations of Inconel 718", highlights researcher Amaia Jiménez.
What does the poster you have presented consist of?
In poster we present a methodology for the wear prediction of tool in drilling operations of Inconel 718. This material is a nickel-based superalloy, which is often used in applications for the aeronautical sector because it has good properties, which are also maintained at high temperatures. However, it is also a difficult material to machine and causes a lot of wear on cutting tools.
What benefits can be obtained thanks to its research?
Considering that the drilling operation is usually performed in the final stages of component manufacturing, it is very important to control the wear of the tool in these processes as it can generate distortions in the part when it already has a high added value.
What methodology is presented in this work?
In this work a methodology is presented to predict the end of life of the tool in drilling processes by monitoring the cutting forces and based on a series of characteristics of the values of these forces. The methodology was validated for tools with different coating materials.
What's new?
The main novelty is the methodology proposal for predicting the failure of the tool by monitoring the cutting forces generated during drilling processes. The methodology makes it possible to control the condition of the tool and to replace it before it breaks, thus avoiding damage or deformation of the part to be drilled.
Which researchers have participated in your essay?
This work has been a partnership between Tecnun and Ceit in which Mikel Arizmendi, professor and researcher of department of Mechanical Engineering and Materials of Tecnun,José Manuel Sánchez, professor and researcher of Ceit and myself have participated.
What does it mean to receive this recognition?
This recognition is a joy for group of research and an added motivation that encourages us to continue working and collaborating with each other. In addition, it serves us as sample of the interest that has the work that we do. Any congress is a good opportunity to share the work that we do at department and if, in addition, we get a recognition like this award, even more.
