César Arellano: Intellectual exceptionality is one of the most overlooked specific educational support needs today.

The University launches an online expert course in High Intellectual Potential to train professionals capable of detecting and intervening in the classroom.

What is high intellectual potential and how is it identified, and do we mean the same thing when we talk about high intellectual abilities? How can it be detected in the classroom? And once detected, how should we work with these students to keep them motivated, challenged and emotionally well cared for?

The course 'Diploma Expert in High Abilities (High Intellectual Potential)' of the University of Navarra in partnership with the Renzulli Center, will address these issues and provide its participants with detection tools and intervention guidelines that favor a positive development , as well as academic and staff growth of students with high intellectual potential.

Cesar Arellanodirector of the Renzulli Center and professor at the Master's Degree in Educational and Psychological Intervention explains that "there is no terminological consensus regarding the concept of a person with high abilities and that, although there are common factors supported by empirical evidence, the operative definition ("at the high schoollevel") varies between countries and even between regions of Spain". For this reason, "we prefer to speak of high intellectual potential, a term with which we seek to move away from the need to "impose" a single definition, and which also encompasses another subject of student body, such as the high performing academic student body and the highly motivated towards learning. All of them are students who can benefit from some of the intervention measures traditionally provided exclusively for the student body with high intellectual abilities".

"An advanced use of language (with a rich vocabulary and a precise and sensitive expression to nuances), a high learning speed (especially in new contexts) or having interests of older people, are some of the indicators that we could be facing a student with high intellectual potential or high intellectual potential," he adds.

For Arellano, having professionals capable of taking care of the socioemotional part of this student body is crucial. "Our kids need to feel understood and listened to. If we want their curiosity and good attitude towards learning not to disappear and for them to be able to persist, especially in the face of tasks that are not very attractive to them, we must offer them challenging and meaningful learning. She adds: "Intellectual exceptionality is one of the most overlooked specific educational support needs today, and this is a major challenge for the educational center, parents and students themselves.
