The research center in Nutrition (CIN) of the University of Navarra collaborates with the Navarra start up Genbioma Aplicaciones SL and the Public University of Navarra (UPNA) in the assessment of the effect on blood glucose of a probiotic. The project Prediabetcare aims to develop a probiotic that allows prediabetic people to reduce blood glucose levels.

Funded by the Government of Navarra in the framework of the 2020 call for the realization of projects of research and development, Prediabetcare has as goal the development of a food supplement aimed at those people who have slightly elevated blood glucose levels, but without becoming diabetic. Currently, there is no product on the market for people who are in the pre-diabetic stages of diabetes to reduce their blood glucose levels.

The initiative is carried out between the University of Navarra, the Public University of Navarra, with whom the preclinical development of the probiotic has been carried out, and the technology-based business Genbioma Aplicaciones S.L. This Navarrese start up is specialized in services of research and development for the development of new solutions in the field of probiotics and other bioactive compounds focused on improving pathologies such as diabetes, obesity and metabolic syndrome.

Call for volunteers
The research center in Nutrition of the University of Navarra (CIN) will begin in March the execution of the essay of intervention in humans with the goal to evaluate the efficacy of the probiotic. For the essay , 136 people between 18 and 70 years of age, overweight or obese and with slightly elevated blood glucose levels, but not diabetic (between 100 and 125 mg/dl), are required.

Those interested in participating in the study can register by writing to the e-mail address voluntariosnut@unav.es indicating Prediabetcare in the subject line.
