Students of the University of Navarra choose the best architectural works of Pamplona of the last five years
The students of the Master's Degree of design Architectural have selected the Church of San Jorge, the Aquavox, the Bus Station and the restaurant 'El Mercao'.
The students of Master's Degree in design Architectural of the University of Navarra have chosen the four best architectural works carried out in Pamplona in the last five years. Their choice is part of an exercise in architectural theory taught at postgraduate program by German professor and architect Wilfried Wang.
The first award went to the Church and parish of the San Jorge neighborhood, by architects Tabuenca and Leache. The three runner-up prizes went to the Aquavox, by Otxotorena, González Presencio and Tena; the Bus Station, by Blasco, Tabuenca, Sagastume and Armendáriz; and the 'El Mercao' restaurant, by Vaillo and Irigaray.
The students made a first selection of 20 works, and after analyzing them from different points of view, they selected the four best works. Also, during the workshop of presentation, they briefly explained their criteria for choosing the best of those made in Pamplona in the last five years.
design or sustainability?
In addition to the presentation of the students' work , the School of Architecture hosted a lecture by architect Wilfried Wang in which he analyzed the work of the architect in the commitment to sustainability.
In his lecture, entitled 'Changing paradigms: sustainability's challenge to architecture', he offered an analysis of the opportunities and challenges that architects must meet for their clients and society in this subject.
"There is a conflict of interests in the role of the architect: on the one hand there are the purely aesthetic criteria, which make reference letter to design of what we build, and on the other hand there is the factor of sustainability to which every architect must pay the utmost attention," says the German architect.
In Wang's opinion, "currently it is not thought that good design goes hand in hand with sustainability, so the architect maintains the conflict between what the regulations require and what he really wants to do to differentiate his works from the rest."
With regard to examples of buildings in which sustainability is a prime construction factor, he highlighted the case of the Spanish pavilion at the 2008 Universal Exhibition exhibition in Zaragoza, designed by Professor Patxi Mangado.
Wilfried Wang considers the topic of sustainability of paramount importance for future architects, so his students of the Master's Degree in design Architectural are analyzing it during this semester in the classes he teaches at School of Architecture of the University of Navarra.
