"The labor market will have to face the challenge of an aging working-age population."

José Luis Álvarez, Associate Dean of the School of Economics, addressed the demographic challenge of Navarra in the presentation of yearbook of Economics of Navarra 2015. In his speech, the professor of department of Economics raised the aging of the population of Navarra as one of the great challenges of the region.

Professor Álvarez was accompanied by the Director General of Economic Policy of the Government of Navarra, Izaskun Goñi; the Director of the Economic Policy Service, Carolina Viguria; and the PhD in Economics of the UPNA Amaya Erro, in an event that analyzed the current status and the economic prospects of Navarra on the occasion of the presentation of the yearbook Economic in an event of the Fridays of development Economic.

"By 2029 the median age will have reached 48 years," announced Professor Alvarez, who in turn stated that by then "the working-age population will shrink by 2% while the population over 66 years of age will have grown by almost 30%."

In view of the aging of the working-age population, Professor Álvarez announced that "the labor market will witness a struggle to attract and maintain talent". In addition, other measures will have to be taken, such as "rethinking the pension system" or the possibility of "people over 65 extending their working age with attractive formulas".
