The BIOMA Institute participates in the lecture international 'The Roads to Development'
BIOMA Institute boosts its commitment to a more just and sustainable future with two round tables focused on Economics, sustainability and Education

The University of Navarra held this week the international lecture "The Roads to Development: Work, Markets and Institutions", a meeting that brought together leading international experts toreflect on the concept of development and the factors that make it possible in the current context. Over the course of several conference, participants addressed core topic such as technology, work, productivity, sustainability, democracy and peace, reviewing from an interdisciplinary perspective the paths towards a more humane and inclusive development . The Biodiversity and Environment Institute BIOMA played an active role in the event, participating in two round tables focused on Economics and sustainability, as well as on building a just and sustainable future through Education.
At the roundtable 'Economy and SustainabilityRafael Mora, Laura Ramirez and Sol Cavalieri, doctorate students at Tecnun, presented their research work on the subject, moderated by Carmen Jaca, researcher at the BIOMA Institute at Tecnun. The programs of study presented highlighted aspects such as Smart Circular Economics in the hotel sector, the plastic value chain in the industry of the Basque Country and a plan for the simultaneous implementation of environmental, social and economic aspects for companies. "Our study demonstrates that a well-articulated Circular Waste Hub can be the starting point for an effective industrial symbiosis in the plastics sector, by connecting the agents of the value chain and addressing the economic, technical, social, legislative and cooperation factors that condition its transition to circular Economics ," said Laura Ramirez during her speech.
On the other hand, the roundtable 'Education: Building a Sustainable and Just Futurebrought together Ana Villarroya and Bienvenido León, researchers from the BIOMA Institute at the School of Science and the School of Communication, Ruth Breeze, from the Institute of Culture and Society and Raúl Bermejo, professor at the School of Science, to discuss the importance of the different perspectives of Education in building a future that is committed to sustainability. The roundtable was moderated by Marie-Anne Reynell, director of development of the Science Museum of the University of Navarra and member of the BIOMA Institute's Environmental Culture and Society Unit.
Bienvenido León showed us theeducational project with journalism students in which they designed web reports on environmental and social issues in Navarra. Ana Villarroya delved into the objectives of the Environmental Society and Culture Unit of the BIOMA Institute, such as the organization of sessions from different areas of scientific knowledge to promote dialogue, the search for synergies and act as a catalyst for interdisciplinary cooperation at the University of Navarra. Raul Bermejo addressed the Landscapes Program, developed in the Degree of Environmental Sciences and the double Degree of Biology and Environmental Sciences of the University of Navarra, which offers the student body a deep vision, both scientific and cultural, of the interrelationship between humans and the earth, through multiple regional, national and international field trips. Finally, Ruth Breeze explained the KINESIS Project, an initiative that mobilizes students to areas suffering from depopulation to implement projects that revitalize rural heritage and support their inhabitants.
BIOMA Institute's participation in The Roads to Development has been a valuable opportunity to share its interdisciplinary vision on the challenges of sustainable development and to strengthen the partnership with experts from different areas and international universities. This meeting reinforces the Institute's commitment to research for the common good and the promotion of a model of development that integrates environmental sustainability, social progress and economic growth from an ethical and humanistic perspective.
