The School of Philosophy and Letters commemorates its 70th anniversary with an exhibition that traces its history

The sample, in virtual format, includes data, photographs and objects that illustrate some of the main milestones of these seven decades.

The School of Philosophy and Letters of the University of Navarra celebrates its 70th anniversary this year. In addition to the commemorative events organized for the upcoming October 4thIn the framework the Alumni Weekend, the annual alumni meeting , an exhibition has been inaugurated that reviews, through documents, photographs and original objects, the main milestones of its trajectory from 1955 to the present.

The sample, in virtual format, proposes a chronological journey that begins in 1955, when the School was born as the School of History on the third floor of the Museum of Navarre, with just eleven students and five professors under the direction of Federico Suárez. Just two years later, Antonio Fontán, a core topic in the academic development of the institution, joined the School, and in 1960 the Institute of Liberal Arts was launched, directed by the American William Stetson.

The sixties marked a period of expansion with the creation of new sections and Chairs. In 1961, the Philosophy section began, promoted by professors such as Leonardo Polo and Joaquín Ferrer, and in 1963 the Chair of Basque Language and Culture was inaugurated. Chair of Basque language and Cultureunder the direction of José Miguel de Barandiarán. That same year, the first Philosophical Meetings were held, an international congress that has become a quotation of reference letter. In 1964, among other milestones, the first Honorary doctorate the University was awarded to a proposal the School of Philosophy and Letters; the inauguration of the Central Building and the launching of the programs of study HispanicPhilology .

The exhibition also sample how the School broadened its academic and research horizons in later decades: the creation in 1967 of the Institute of Spanish language and Culture (ILCE), the International Conversations on History (1972), the launching of the Education Sciences section (1975), or the beginning of the Monumental Catalog of Navarre in 1977, a two-decade project directed by Professor Concepción García Gainza.

In the 1980s and 1990s, new initiatives were founded that marked the School's profile , such as the Instituto business y Humanismo (1986) and the research group Siglo de Oro (1990). (1990). In the 21st century, double Degrees were introduced with Communication (2001) and Law (2015); the Chair of Heritage and Navarrese Art (2015); the Chair of Navarrese Heritage and Art began its activity (2005); and new educational and research proposals were launched, such as the Writing Center (2017), the Diploma in Archaeology (2018), the Speechlaboratory (2018) or the Digital Humanities laboratory (2020).

The sample also dedicates a space to the recognitions obtained by the School, such as the awarding of Honorary Doctorates, the defense of the thesis issue 1000 in 2016, or the consolidation of international programs such as the ILCE summer courses.

The last section of the exhibition is dedicated to the recent expansion of the academic programs, with the creation of the Degree in Philosophy, Politics and Economics (2018), the Degree in Spanish language and Literature (2022) and the Master's Degree in Christianity and Contemporary Culture, which will be taught in Madrid from the academic year 2022-23.
