Ignacio Arellano and Andrés Eichmann, professors at the UN's group de Investigación Siglo de Oro (GRISO) carried out a new expedition to the jungles of Madidi, Bolivia, in July 2011. On this occasion they were accompanied by cameraman Santiago González-Barros, student of F-COM and, as usual, by Alain Mesili (the photos shown on these pages are his).

Madidi Jungle Expedition (Bolivia) 2011

The area, known as "the land of the chunchos", is still largely uncharted land. The Google Earth images themselves do not correspond to reality, as the rivers change course every rainy season.

Madidi Jungle Expedition (Bolivia) 2011The expeditions carried out since 2009 respond to a need for direct knowledge to enrich the work of editing and annotating the chronicles of Captain Juan Recio de León (17th century), together with those of other famous people who also wrote about the area. Among the sources of interest are texts from the Franciscan order, such as the chronicle of Diego de Mendoza: not only because of the presence of the Franciscans Fray Gregorio de Bolívar or Bernardino de Cárdenas (at the beginning of the 17th century), but also because this order is the one that maintained stable missions throughout the north of La Paz from 1680 onwards.

This year's route included sectors that were travelled by most of the explorers, conquerors and missionaries of the 16th - 19th centuries (southeastern part of the route) and included others that were the scene of only a few incursions in the 16th century (Gómez de Tordoya, in 1568), and which reappear much later, in Franciscan sources of the 18th century.

They departed from the city of Rurrenabaque. The GRISO researchers crossed the Beni River to San Buenaventura, and from there they travelled to Ixiamas. This town was founded by Franciscans from the province of San Antonio de los Charcas in 1721 under the name of San Antonio de Ixiamas. A little more than a century ago it was considered a very precarious settlement, and it was thought that at any moment it could be annihilated by an invasion of the Guarayos.

After staying in Ixiamas long enough to stock up for a long journey without supplies, they headed for a practically uninhabited spot called Puerto Cerima, on the banks of the Madidi River. There they assembled the raft on which they travelled a considerable stretch of the river. They then continued on in a previously hired "motorboat", which they used to go down the rest of the Madidi River and up the Beni.

Madidi Jungle Expedition (Bolivia) 2011During the course of the Madidi they had the opportunity to see the area where the Franciscan mission of Santiago de Pacaguaras developed (from 1796 onwards); they also passed along the banks of the old mission of Cavinas, founded by Friar Simón José de Sousa in 1785. They were able to take advantage of the opportunity to enter some of the communities that still preserve a large part of their cultural heritage. plenary session of the Executive Council Among the knowledge recorded in written sources several centuries ago, there are some that are still alive and well: this is the case of knowledge of the medicinal qualities of lianas and many other plants. They also collected stories that form part of the intangible riches of the communities.

It can be said that the team will soon be in a position to make the sources speak. To this end, they intend to bring writings from different periods into dialogue with each other. Many chronicles from the 16th and 17th centuries are enriched by the observations of later travellers, such as those of the Viennese naturalist Tadeus Haenke, who travelled extensively throughout the region at the end of the 18th century, or those of other explorers in the following centuries. The famous Alcides d'Orbigny did not want to close his famous description of Bolivia without passing on the information he had gathered about the region, even though he had not been able to visit it. He considered that, in spite of being "the least known perhaps of all America, it is nevertheless, because of the accidents of its surface, the richness of its products and the customs of its inhabitants, one of the most remarkable and worthy of attention" (D'Orbigny [1839] 1944, t. III, p. 931).

Ignacio Arellano and Andrés Eichmann, professors at the UN's group de Investigación Siglo de Oro (GRISO) carried out a second expedition to the Madidi jungles in Bolivia in June 2010. As in the previous year, they were supported by Alain Mesili, explorer and mountaineer, among others.

Madidi Jungle Expedition (Bolivia) 2010These journeys are integrated into the research project which consists of the publication of chronicles, including the writings of Captain Juan Recio de León, who recounts his adventures and services to Kings Philip III and Philip IV. To these are added other sources by famous people who also wrote about the area. These include the Mercedarian Diego de Porres, who left abundant writings and is the subject of a chronicle by Tirso de Molina; Miguel Cabello de Balboa, renowned author of the Miscelánea Antártica; Fray Bernardino de Cárdenas, who was later bishop of Paraguay and Santa Cruz de la Sierra.

On the other hand, the area was the scene of the passage of other interesting characters: before Pizarro's arrival in Peru, the military entries of the Incas Túpac Yupanqui and Huayna Cápac took place. And from very early in the 16th century, numerous and almost always ephemeral attempts at Spanish penetration began. Pero Anzures de Camporredondo made his "premiere" in 1538-1539, in a workshop that Cieza de León describes as "the most pitiful and distressing that has ever been made in all the Indies".

Much ink also flowed about other characters whose fate was linked to this territory: Diego Ramírez Carlos, an aspiring neo-Inca monarch; the Jesuit Bernardo de Reus, whose martyrdom at the hands of the Chunchos is reported by the chroniclers Antonio de la Calancha, Bernardo de Torres and Juan Eusebio Nieremberg. Apart from them, the presence of Pedro de la Egui Urquiza, a man core topic in many negotiations carried out with great skill by various indigenous "nations" in the area during the first half of the 17th century, is worth mentioning.

Madidi Jungle Expedition (Bolivia) 2010

The GRISO researchers' journey began in the village of Pelechuco. From there they climbed up to a pass in the Apolobamba mountain range (the Sanchez Pass) and descended to the village of Mojos, founded in 1615 by Pedro de la Egui Urquiza. This first stretch lasted four days, and they travelled it accompanied by Ceferino Cusi Condori, who with his family led the herd of 14 llamas that carried most of the luggage.

Madidi Jungle Expedition (Bolivia) 2010In Mojos they rescued a manuscript volume containing records of sacraments, burials and various events recorded by the missionaries from 1792 to the first third of the 20th century. It was photographed in its entirety, and thanks to this it was possible to digitise submit at file de La Paz, where numerous sources for the history of that part of the country are collected. They also photographed baroque pieces of great quality and interest: among them an image of San Juan de Sahagún of excellent quality invoice.

They continued their journey for another four hours conference, in an area unsuitable for flames, due to the heat, so they loaded the impedimenta on two mules and a horse. They reached Virgen del Rosario, on the banks of the Tuichi River. After crossing it (by raft), they went up to Pata, a village founded in 1680 under the name of San Juan de Buenavista.

They then passed through Santa Cruz del Valle Ameno, founded by Esteban de Aramburu in 1720. Finally they arrived at Apolo, a small northern town located in what could be called the "gateway" to the Chunchos' country.

UN professors traverse the Madidi jungle in Bolivia, in the footsteps of the conquistador Recio de León

Ignacio Arellano, Andrés Eichmann and Víctor García Ruiz, professors at the UN's group de Investigación Siglo de Oro (GRISO) carried out an expedition to the jungles of Madidi, in Bolivia, in July, accompanied by explorer and mountaineer Alain Mesili, from La Paz, and Marcelo Arze, an expert in natural conservation problems, reconstructing part of the explorations of Captain Juan Recio de León, who founded several towns in the region in the 17th century and opened up paths that are now forgotten, in search of mythical places, an expert in natural conservation problems, reconstructing part of the explorations of Captain Juan Recio de León, who founded several towns in the region in the 17th century, and opened paths, now forgotten, in search of the mythical country they called Paitite, which is another version of the legend of El Dorado.

Madidi Jungle Expedition (Bolivia) 2009

The trip is part of an ongoing research project, project , which consists of the publication of a chronicle in which Recio de León recounts his travels, adventures and services to the kings Philip III and Philip IV. In order to verify the places and the news of the chronicle, dated 1623, they have crossed a part of the area that for several years was the scene of Recio's work, who gives news of the distances, rivers, climates, plants and animals, and the tribes that populated these provinces, with their customs, rites and beliefs. He collects news, for example, of a tribe of women without men who fight in wars: they are the ancient Amazons that the discoverers of the New World thought they had identified in the region and on the banks of the river that later took their name.

Many of the data recorded in the old writings are incomplete, and the project of the GRISO aims to fill in the chronicle of the conquistador with a series of details and notes that compare the situation in the 17th century with the present, add geographical references and verify the survival or change of the towns and places.

Madidi Jungle Expedition (Bolivia) 2009On the way there are numerous rivers to ford: the Limón, the Hondo, the Eslabón, Piñalito, Uchupiamonas, until reaching the Tuichi river, often mentioned by Recio de León, a river that is crossed today in the same way as in the XVIIth century, on rafts of light logs tied with lianas.

financial aid The GRISO researchers' journey started from the town of Chipulizani, named by Recio de León as rich in silver mines, then the expedition crossed on foot, with the help of six porters, the mountain ranges and rivers of the Madidi jungle, until they reached San José de Uchupiamonas, another of the places mentioned in the chronicle.

The researchers took data on the exact location, heights of the mountains, distances between rivers, etc., with the intention of adding an exact map of the region, hitherto non-existent, which will accompany the publication of the text of the chronicle. A botanical report will also be added to position by Gabriel Arellano, whose doctoral dissertation is devoted to the vegetation of Madidi, one of the most unknown and richest jungles in terms of species, as yet uncatalogued. Madidi is today a protected reservation and a large part of the forest still looks as it must have looked during Recio de León's expeditions.
